Technical deep-dive · The Zix-Zak

How the Zix-Zak recovers water and ions, step by step.

The Zix-Zak is the IChemE award-winning ion-exchange engine inside the Desalus service. Here is how it captures the dissolved ions in inland brackish water — 5,000 to 50,000 mg/L TDS — to deliver clean water and sorted fertilizer, past the point where membranes stall, with zero brine.

The mechanism

How the Zix-Zak works, step by step

Five stages carry inland brackish water through the ion-exchange cycle — capturing, eluting and finishing the dissolved ions while the water flows out clean.

Profile the ions

The full-panel water report fixes the ion inventory — which cations and anions are present, and at what concentration. This sets the exchange chemistry and the recovery targets for the whole cycle.

Pre-condition the feed

Suspended solids and foulants are removed up front so the exchange media stay clean and selective — protecting the capacity that lets recovery run past the membrane plateau.

Selective ion capture (load)

As water passes through the Zix-Zak media, target ions are exchanged out of solution and held on the resin. The water leaves de-ionized and clean while the ions stay behind, sorted by affinity.

Elute & regenerate

The loaded media are eluted to release the captured ions as concentrated, separated streams, then regenerated for the next cycle — so the system runs continuously without producing a mixed brine.

Finish water & fertilizer

The recovered water is polished to clean-water spec and the eluted, sorted ions are finished into farm-grade fertilizer — two saleable outputs from one stream.

Close the loop — zero discharge

With every ion captured and finished as product, nothing is left to discharge. The Zix-Zak operates at true zero-liquid-discharge inside the Desalus service.

What it means for your site

Why operators choose the Zix-Zak

Working at the ion level changes the outcome — more water back, sortable by-product, and no recovery ceiling.

Past the membrane wall

Ion exchange keeps recovering where osmotic pressure stops RO — 99%+ of the stream returns as clean water.

Sortable by-product

Because ions are captured selectively, the recovered solids finish as graded fertilizer instead of mixed sludge.

No brine to permit

The cycle elutes and finishes ions rather than rejecting them, so there's no concentrate stream and no disposal permit.

More water reclaimed

Higher recovery eases supply pressure and cuts the cost of make-up water across the operation.

Lower all-in water cost

No capital, no operating burden — you pay only for clean water at an attractive rate per thousand gallons that beats your current treat-and-dispose economics.

Operated as a service

Desalus capitalizes, tunes, runs and optimizes the Zix-Zak to your exact ion profile — you simply buy back the clean water it produces.

Why ion exchange instead of more membranes?

Membrane recovery is limited by osmotic pressure, which climbs as ions concentrate. Ion exchange acts on the ions directly, so the Zix-Zak keeps recovering past that wall — and captures ions selectively, which is what makes the by-product a sortable fertilizer rather than mixed brine.

What does "regeneration" mean here?

After the media load up with captured ions, they're eluted to release those ions as concentrated streams, then restored to capture again. This cyclic operation is what lets the system run continuously without ever creating a waste brine.

Does the Zix-Zak work alone?

It's the ion-exchange heart of the broader Desalus zero-waste process — paired with the pre-conditioning and finishing stages that turn captured ions into farm-grade fertilizer and the recovered water into clean supply.

How do I get numbers for my site?

Send Desalus your full-panel water quality and volume report. You'll receive a site-specific model of recovery, your clean-water rate per thousand gallons, and the capital and disposal costs you avoid for your exact ion profile.
